The evolution of German submarines traces back to 1849 when Bavarian soldier Wilhelm Bauer conceived the idea of a submarine during the Schleswig-Holstein War. In Kiel, he realized a model that was built in 1850 by August Howaldt at Schweffel and Howaldt under the name 'Brandtaucher'. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, the test U-boat sank during Wilhelm Bauer's test drive. In 1897, Karl Leps constructed an experimental diving boat with the hull number 333, which was followed by the construction of the 'Forelle' in 1902. Based on the plans of engineer Raymondo Lorenzo dEquevilley-Montjustin, who was influenced by the developments of constructors Claude Gobet, Gustave Zede, Isaac Peral, and the Englishman Waddington, the 'Forelle' was the first functional German submarine, equipped with a conning tower, periscope, air purification system, and bilge pump. Powered by an electric motor using a 715 ampere-hour capacity battery, the 'Forelle' had a range of approximately 25 nautical miles at a speed of four knots.
